Over the past three years, WestMET accomplished astonishing business growth and has made remarkable strides in supporting Alberta’s environmental protection efforts and industrial development. By sharing its community-driven approaches and technical expertise, it has developed a sustainable framework rooted in leadership and social responsibilities. This foundation has fueled advancements in research and education, spurred agricultural innovations and accelerated initiatives toward renewable energy.
To pay it forward, WestMET has established the WestMET Community Fund, a new opportunity for individuals, groups, and non-profit organizations seeking grant support for community-level initiatives, innovative solutions and impactful ideas. At its launch, the fund donated $42,880 to the Community Foundation of Southeastern Alberta (CFSEA) affirming a long-term commitment to support the foundation’s vision and programs over the next 25 years.
“We’re grateful for the opportunity to work alongside WestMET and the local team, guiding their corporate community investment. This initiative will be instrumental in bolstering the region’s charitable sector. WestMET’s lasting impact will support the community for generations to come.” – Niki Gray, Executive Director of the Community Foundation of Southeastern Alberta
This grant will support communities such as Special Area 2, Town of Hanna, and Village of Youngstown in southeastern Alberta, all of which have made significant and remarkable contributions to WestMET’s agricultural and mining operations at the Sheerness Mine. The grant, which is now open for applications, is focused on local communities, First Nation & Metis, environmental, youth & education and health & wellness initiatives.
“WestMET is very pleased to give back to the community in and around the Hanna and Special Area 2 region. This program allows us to give back to the people, groups, and families that gave so much over the past few decades to the Sheerness Mine, producing affordable power for the province. As WestMET pivots to new opportunities, we are excited to partner with PACE on establishing this grant program and look forward to building strong relationships and supporting continued growth in the local community which have been an integral part of our journey.” – Kyle Hobbs, WestMET Director of Operations

With its growing positive reputation and expanding project portfolio, WestMET has collaborated with Pathfinder Clean Energy (PACE) to establish a 13 MWac photovoltaic solar-powered electrical generator in Hanna, Alberta. PACE, a key player in clean energy development and food and water security strategies in the United Kingdom and Spain, is now broadening its reach in North America.
“PACE is excited to be partnering with WestMET to bring sustainable and innovative renewable energy projects to Alberta. Our projects benefit the economy, the environment, and the community in addition to offering benefits across the food-energy-water nexus.” – Claude Mindorff, Director of Development, Pathfinder Clean Energy (PACE)

This partnership not only advances the industrial adoption of clean energy but also creates employment opportunities and supports skills development engaging agricultural and mining communities. Together, they are fostering workforce growth and laying the groundwork for future businesses opportunities.
